Agricultural residue pulping faces some problems that limit pulp production. These raw materials are themselves large in size, require large storage space, and are expensive to transport long distances of raw materials, so the scale of non-wood pulping plants is usually very small. Another major obstacle to successful non-wood pulping is the high silicon content of the feedstock. In the alkaline pulping process, almost every stage of the chemical recovery process causes serious problems due to the dissolution of silicon into the cooking liquor. Due to these problems, most plants do not recycle all of the chemicals, resulting in poor economics and environmental problems. Increasingly stringent emission regulations in China have forced many small factories to close. There is therefore a pressing need for a new, environmentally friendly pulping process.
